Our firm is seeking a highly organized and proactive Legal Assistant to support lawyers in our Indigenous Practice. This position is well-suited to someone with experience in Aboriginal and Indigenous Law (preferred), ideally with a background working with First Nations clients, and someone who demonstrates cultural and linguistic competency. Familiarity with litigation procedures, including the procedures of administrative tribunals, as well as a background in corporate/commercial matters, is an asset.

The successful candidate will be a detail-oriented professional who can manage complex calendars, coordinate meetings and travel, and handle a wide range of administrative tasks with efficiency and discretion.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the day-to-day operations of a team lawyers representing Indigenous clients, with a primary focus in Aboriginal and Indigenous Law.
  • Manage lawyers’ calendars, including meeting coordination with Indigenous clients and arranging travel and accommodations.
  • Draft, edit, and finalize a variety of legal documents and correspondence, including pleadings, notices, affidavits, motion records, and materials for all court levels, as well as Regulatory Boards and Tribunals.
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date lawyer files and records systems.
  • Handle a wide range of administrative tasks, including email and calendar management, meeting coordination, file opening/closing, and duties related to accounting such as billing and expense tracking.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, third parties, court staff, and other legal professionals.
  • Provide backup coverage and general office support as needed.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a Legal or Executive Assistant in a law firm setting;
  • Experience in Aboriginal and Indigenous Law is preferred;
  • Experience with litigation procedures, including the procedures of administrative tribunals, as well as a background in corporate/commercial matters, is an asset; and
  • Legal Administration and/or Law Clerk Diploma considered an asset.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Knowledge of and experience working with First Nations clients, including cultural and linguistic competency, is preferred;
  • Familiarity with Aderant accounting software an asset;
  • Strong technical skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, and Calendar);
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Solid understanding of business and legal terminology;
  • Client-service oriented;
  • Ability to work within a team environment and independently;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; and
  • Conscientious with strong attention to detail.
