Alain Bartleman recently spoke with Radio-Canada regarding new government advisories recommending that First Nations members carry a valid passport, in addition to their Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS), when entering the United States. For over 200 years, many First Nations members have crossed the Canada-U.S. border freely—a right recognized under the Jay Treaty of 1794. Bartleman detailed the practical implications of this shift for First Nations across Canada, explaining how increased documentation requirements may impact established cross-border rights and daily mobility.

Fogler, Rubinoff LLP was proud to host Pro Bono Ontario for another successful Sponsor Day in support of the Free Legal Advice Hotline.

Building on the momentum of two impactful sponsor days in 2025, this event brought together an outstanding group of volunteer lawyers, including several 2025 calls, who generously contributed their time and expertise to assist low-income Ontarians facing legal challenges.

It was inspiring to see new and experienced lawyers volunteering side by side with care, focus, and a shared commitment to expanding access to justice across Ontario.

We extend our gratitude to Myriah Graves, Ruth Durgy, and our firm’s leadership team for their continued support of Pro Bono Ontario and for making these sponsor days possible. This collaboration reflects our ongoing dedication to giving back to the communities we serve.

Congratulations to Aida Nabavi on receiving the 2025 Volunteer Service Award from the Province of Ontario. Through patience, empathy, and unwavering dedication, she has made a lasting impact on the lives she’s touched and exemplifies the spirit of service that strengthens our communities.
